blog What if Utrecht did not exist?

If Utrecht did not exist, we would be perfectly happy in these 5 places!

What if Utrecht didn’t exist? The Netherlands would be nothing! How would we survive without the stunning canals, abundance of bikes, countless friendly students, that huge tower and the home of our dear Miffy?

Well, Utrecht City Hotels has an answer to this nightmare. Many stunning towns and villages are just a stone’s throw away from the city. These are our five favorite villages / towns around Utrecht that are worth a visit:

  1. Naarden-Vesting
Naarden-Vesting was a military fortress in the 16th century and is part of the Dutch ‘Waterlinie’. The whole town breathes the military past. You can make beautiful walks and boat trips, but Naarden-Vesting is also nice for shopping, lunch, dinner and museum visits.

  2. Amersfoort
Amersfoort is a very cozy and intimate city. With its hundreds of monuments, charming canals, squares full of terraces and shops, it is the ideal city for a day away from Utrecht.
Tip: visit the zoo, climb up the Lieve Vrouwentoren or view the city from the water.

  3. Lage Vuursche
Lage Vuursche is a small but cozy village on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug. Lage Vuursche is primarily known for its beautiful forests, midget golf gardens, the main street with an Anton Pieck-like appearance, typical Dutch pancake houses and castle Drakesteyn where Princess Beatrix lives. This village is particularly attractive for hikers and cyclists among us!
  4. Haarzuilens
The picturesque village of Haarzuilens is best known as the location of Kasteel de Haar. This castle is a fairytale!

  5. 's-Hertogenbosch
Discover the picturesque streets of 's-Hertogenbosch, let the stunning Sint Janskathedraal surprise you and enjoy a delicious Bossche bol. In addition, Den Bosch (what the Dutch tend to call this city) is bursting with amazing concept stores and trendy fashion shops.
Tip: Discover the Binnendieze by boat. The Binnendieze is the collective name for the ancient system of waterways within the city walls.
